Vulnerability management is experiencing a historic turning point. The signal from NIST, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, regarding the need to revise its vulnerability analysis and classification processes points to the exhaustion of the traditional model. For decades, we have relied on static databases and risk scores that, while useful, no longer keep pace with the breakneck speed of software development and new threats driven by artificial intelligence.


For technology and security leaders, this movement is a warning sign. The compliance model based solely on fixing what is cataloged in public lists has become insufficient. The volume of new vulnerabilities discovered daily exceeds human capacity for manual analysis, creating a security liability that grows exponentially. The delay in updating these official databases leaves companies exposed for unacceptable periods of time.


The future of IT governance requires a transition to contextual and dynamic risk analysis.

It's not enough to know that a vulnerability exists; you need to understand, in real time, whether it is exploitable in your company's specific environment. Artificial intelligence will play a central role in this new era, allowing for prioritization based not only on the theoretical severity of the problem, but on the actual probability of an attack.


We are moving towards a scenario where agility in decision-making will be the main indicator of security maturity. Waiting for the official standard may mean arriving too late.
